My Take
I really like this app. This is a simple but effective app. Comparing and contrasting is a very important skill in the primary grades and using a venn diagram is the most effective way of teaching it. My 3rd graders had no problems using this app for the first time. It was more engaging to them to create a venn diagram on the ipad rather than on paper. It was easy for them to type in their responses and then move the words to the correct place on the venn diagram. This app will be used quite often in my classroom.
How I Use It
I've used this as a whole class activity. We compared and contrasted the winter and summer olympics. I have also assigned it as independent and partner work. The students compared and contrasted two stories and created their own venn diagrams on the ipads. We used the Black Lagoon series. After each student read a Black Lagoon book they were partnered up and created a venn diagram using this app to compare and contrast the two Black Lagoon stories. The kids loved being able to do this activity on the ipad! I teach 3rd grade and we have only used the two circles so far. The one question I had was putting titles on the diagram. We were able to put a title in for the whole diagram. But I wanted the students to put a title above each circle. For example- winter olympics and summer olympics. We couldn't find a place to do this so I had them type it into the new item box and then drag them to the top of the circles.I am also not sure what the item description is for. Not sure if that is really necessary? Might be more needed in upper grade levels. My 3rd graders just used the "label your item" box. I especially like how the students can email me their finished venn diagrams and I don't have to look on every ipad to see their work.
