Artifacts help students think like a historian
Community Review for Reading Like A Historian
My Take
The lessons provided by SHEG are invaluable. The scaffolding is done in such a way that all ability levels are able to think critically about the issues. They offer lessons for all grade levels using primary source documents. The documents and activities are grouped in such a way that makes learning a participatory activity.
How I Use It
I would use the lessons provided by SHEG to get students to critically think about historical events and draw their own conclusions based upon the evidence presented. Students must examine artifacts and extract evidence that leads them to their own claims about the event. What better way to teach argument writing in the content areas than this method? Supported by George Hillock's work in his book "Teaching Argument Writing--Grades 6-12." The best writing is evidenced based writing and this website promotes this concept.
