My Take
Because our district has a license for all schools, we have had the opportunity to use all facets of PebbleGo for the last few years. Many teachers use this to supplement social studies learning as well as teach about specific holidays. We also focus a lot on animals in the primary grades and this fills in many gaps where a library collection may fall short. One additional benefit is that after my students are done with their research, many of them want to continue on with other subjects or the games within PebbleGo.
How I Use It
I generally use PebbleGo with students from K-2 when introducing the concept of databases and research. Other databases such as Culturegrams and Worldbook are great tools but have advanced requirements. PebbleGo allows students as young as pre-kindergarten to find a subject related to science, animals, biographies, social studies and dinosaurs with little difficulty. Once a student has gotten to the selected category, there are options to have the content read to them as it highlights as it goes. This has been a great tool with my younger students who haven't even mastered their alphabet; older students get help with new words and can focus on content rather than reading.
I usually use PebbleGo when I start teaching research skills. I allow students to pick a topic within one given section and then have them complete the worksheet that accompanies the subject. I also use PebbleGo to supplement traditional research using books. Whether you use the given worksheets or not, the content and the way it's presented, lends itself to supplementing other forms of research.
