My Take

This is an excellent skill practice tool that provides a differential model to support and enrich student learning. The students are engaged in their learning creating an ownership/challenge to receive the trophy at the end of the skill. That gratification motivates them to move to the next skill. I have had gifted children become frustrated because they were challenged, and I feel this incident provides great insight into IXL.

How I Use It

IXL is used in our classroom 1-2 times weekly and at home for students. The students are motivated to work diligently because I review with them the reports I receive weekly. If the class maintains or improves data from the previous week's report, everyone is invited to the prize box. The program is student driven providing the opportunity to work at their own pace and level. Since it is differential math practice for all children, I am available to provide intervention for struggling students. I also utilize the program to introduce or reteach skills as a whole group.
