My Take

Overall, I think Cat in the Hat- Ice is Nice encourages literacy skills with highlighted narration and helps build more background knowledge. Also, students really were engaged with interacting with diagrams, glossary words, text and pictures. After several readings and practicing, a few advanced readers used the app to record their own voice narrating the story and were able to share it with others. This app is a great way to combine science and social studies concepts with literacy!

How I Use It

The Cat in the Hat- Ice is Nice is a great way to reinforce science and social studies concepts such as the animals and geography of the North and South poles, the earth's orbit around the sun and how bears stay warm. Students have the ability to have the story read to them, or they can read it by themselves. This feature helps the app reach a wider audience as it is of interest to preschoolers and could be read by lower elementary aged students. This app highlights the words as they are read aloud and has a feature where if you tap a bold word, the glossary definition is read to the child. Children also can tap on pictures to hear the word associated with the picture. Older students would still gain valuable knowledge from the book, but would probably not need or use some of these features.
