My Take
My overall opinion is that the Gizmo science simulations offer something that I could not give my students in a traditional lab. The ability to rework a problem or cause drastic changes in an environment without wasting classroom resources is very helpful to students. Occasionally a Gizmo will be rated for middle level students but go far above and beyond the topics we need to cover, but these are few and far between.
How I Use It
I have used this tool for a few years and I enjoy working the simulations into my lessons to help students visualize long-term concepts such as adaptations and evolution. The accompanying student worksheets are well organized and help students build towards higher order thinking questions and scenarios. Using these as formative assessments has been a game changer for determining where I need to spend more time on specifics. This website allows for the redefinition of a traditional science lab and students are able to practice working with their content and technological knowledge.
