Perfect for SSR (Silent Sustained Reading)
Community Review for Flipboard: Your Social News Magazine
My Take
My only criticism is that the app does not filter for age groups / appropriateness. Because this app is not designed as an educational app, there is no filter for content.
How I Use It
A few years ago our district implemented a reading across the curriculum initiative at the HS level encouraging 5 minutes of reading per class period. Flipboard (and a similar app that I prefer, Zite) are the answer to this initiative. These apps allow a teacher to select areas of interest within their content and current articles from a variety of sources are displayed in a colorful, engaging newspaper style format. Siting sources is a breeze as the origin of the article is clearly listed and students are able to email the article to themselves or save it in an archive for later. Each time a student "favorites" an article, Flipboard and Zite will search for similar article themes. These apps allow student choice when being directed to read in class (and therefore they complain less)! I teach a College In High School Nutrition class and this app is invaluable when it comes to keeping up with current health and nutrition information (less teacher time spent looking for and photocopying articles, up-to-the minute articles and color format).
