Community Review for Canva for Education
My Take
Canva isn't so much a teaching tool as a tool to facilitate your teaching (or your students' learning) depending on how you plan to use it. I like the ease of creating posters or flyers and the students are engaged because the process is very simple. I prefer using the website on a desktop or laptop computer. Use it as a means of summative assessment will make any unit of study more interesting. I wish more images were free to use because it's not possible to allow students to purchase them. Another plus is that students can sign up with Google+ so if your school is using Google for Education then account creation is quick and easy. Once signed in, students can work on their projects in school, at home, or wherever they have a digital device.
How I Use It
Canva is a design product that can be used in the classroom as an alternative to the more traditional methods such as PowerPoint. Teachers can create impressive-looking presentations that will grab the class' attention and students can use the features to compile information as a final project or assessment on a unit of study. The interface was easy to learn and students (even younger ones) can learn how to create posters in a short amount of time. One issue is that quite a few of the images are only available by purchasing (cheaply though usually $1) which is not feasible for students and classes. Overall though, the free options are plentiful enough for most projects. There is a website and an app.
